As part of our ongoing commitment to the future of law, Stinson Leonard Street seeks to help pave the way for the future lawyers of tomorrow, helping them build the skills, confidence and experience that will serve them in their professional pursuits.
Stinson Leonard Street is a sponsor of Just the Beginning Foundation, which exposes youth from disadvantaged economic backgrounds to the practice of law, guided by the philosophy that the legal industry benefits from attracting individuals from a variety of backgrounds and experiences. As a sponsor, the firm hosts a reception and several panel luncheons with attorneys and students, with topics focusing on understanding the various areas of law practice, honing writing skills by practicing drafting legal documents, and preparing for college. In addition, the students are immersed in a variety of environments, including court rooms, law firms and law school classes.
Many of today’s brightest and best lawyers got their start in high school or college debate programs. To help students build their skills, the firm is a sponsor of the Women's Debate Institute, which provides young women the opportunity to be a part of a strong community of women who love debate and to gain intensive instruction from top-level debate coaches and national debate champions. The firm’s scholarship defrays the cost of participating in the Institute for one high school student each year.
Cristo Rey provides a Catholic, college prep education enhanced by an innovative corporate work study program to culturally diverse students with economic need. The firm is pleased to employ Cristo Rey students in our Minneapolis office and to provide them with real-life work experience in a professional setting.
In 2013, the firm participated for the first time with STEP-UP Achieve (part of the City of Minneapolis STEP-UP program), connecting young people ages 16 to 21 in paid internships with the 150 top Twin Cities companies. The program is designed to provide work readiness training, on-the-job experience, professional connections, and ongoing mentoring and support. In the summer of 2013, a high school student gained valuable hands-on experience assisting the firm in coordinating its summer law clerk program, fall recruiting and various other attorney recruiting, attorney development and projects related to the firm’s diversity initiative.
In 2012, the University of Missouri—Kansas City hosted one of the Law School Admissions Council's (LSAC) summer Prelaw Undergraduate Scholars (PLUS) programs. This program helps college students prepare for success and increase diversity in the legal profession. The firm participated in the program by hosting a panel presentation for the students, discussing life at a large firm and offering guidance to diverse college students interested in the legal profession.
For several years, Legacy firm Stinson Morrison Hecker has been a sponsor of this scholarship, which serves to increase the level of ethnic diversity in the Kansas City legal community by providing tuition assistance to incoming law students, as well as ACT prep courses for high school students. In 2012, the firm hosted the reception and awards ceremony for the recipients of the scholarship.
Stinson Leonard Street has partnered with CenturyLink and Wyandotte High School in Kansas City, Kansas, for the Pipeline to Success Program. Firm attorneys and representatives from CenturyLink present programs throughout the school year about the legal profession. At the end of the program, students participate in a mock trial.
