Stinson Leonard Street LLP is pleased to announce that Minneapolis partner Liz Kramer has been selected as a 2016 "Attorney of the Year" by Minnesota Lawyer. Each year the paper selects group of attorneys from across the state that have distinguished themselves through their achievements and service to the profession. The Attorneys of the Year were recognized at an awards dinner hosted by the paper this month.
Kramer was selected as part of the group of attorneys that started the Appeals Self Help Clinic through the Minnesota court system. They were nominated by the Minnesota Supreme Court and the Minnesota State Bar Association (MSBA.)
Liz Reppe, the state law librarian, worked with Kramer, the past chair of the appellate section of the MSBA, and a group of attorneys to start an advice-only clinic specifically designed to assist pro se parties in the appellate courts system. The clinic addresses a significant need: As many as a quarter of all appellate filings in Minnesota have at least one pro se litigant. Appellate lawyers volunteer at the monthly clinic to answer questions from pro se litigants about the appeals process and ultimately improve access to justice for everyone and the overall efficiency of the appellate courts. After a one-year pilot project, 90 percent of the litigants who used the clinic reported they were "very satisfied" or "satisfied" with the quality of services they received. The Minnesota self-help clinic is only the second of its kind in the nation.
Kramer handles complex business litigation and represents clients involved in franchise, construction and contract disputes. She also has significant appellate experience and is a leader in the arbitration law community in Minnesota and across the U.S. About half of her cases are in arbitration and she routinely teaches CLEs seminars on arbitration topics. Kramer was a Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Journal 40 under 40 winner in 2014.
Her husband, Ramsey County District Judge Jeff Bryan, was also named a 2016 "Attorney of the Year" by Minnesota Lawyer.
