Joel Leviton is a business-minded intellectual property attorney who helps brand-oriented companies create, develop, and protect strong brands. He works closely with clients to develop global brand protection strategies and advises on selecting, clearing, registering and enforcing trademarks in the U.S. and abroad. With roots in the arts, Joel also helps clients protect and license copyrighted content. He has experience in a variety of industries and works with clients who market and sell consumer products, interactive entertainment, apparel, software, and pharmaceuticals, among other things.
Joel has considerable experience handling disputes involving trademarks, copyrights and domain names, including litigation in federal courts. He frequently represents clients in proceedings before the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board of the United States Patent and Trademark Office. Joel has experience in licensing and exploiting intellectual property, including negotiating and preparing trademark licenses, ingredient-branding licensing, co-branding arrangements, copyright-related agreements and name and likeness licenses. He has a keen interest in and counsels clients on issues relating to trade dress protection and other non-traditional trademarks.
In addition, Joel works with clients as they create and roll out advertising campaigns, providing counsel on advertising law issues, comparative advertising, false advertising, and social media issues. Joel also has significant experience advising on both copyright and trademark fair use. Prior to joining Stinson Leonard Street in 2014, Joel was a principal at Fish & Richardson P.C.
