Stinson Leonard Street’s Summer Associate program is designed to give law students a realistic, on-the-job portrayal of daily life as an associate attorney. Our program features numerous unique components that set us apart from other firms.
Summer associates assume a realistic workload, managing multiple projects at a time. They engage in current client matters and in pro bono legal service. Summer associates do not go through a formal rotation program but, rather, receive projects much in the same way as our associates. We aim to give summer associates experience in all of their interest areas; summer associates are encouraged to seek out projects that match their interests. The work typically is not limited to legal research alone. Over the course of the summer, we look for opportunities for summer associates to work directly with attorneys on projects that involve client contact, factual investigations, witness interviews, negotiations, hearings, depositions, trials and the closing of transactions.
We believe that mentoring is essential to ensuring the summer associate has a successful learning experience. We match each summer associate with an associate and partner mentor. The summer mentor assists the summer associate in adjusting to the firm’s culture, helps the summer associate feel connected to the firm, and provides the summer associate with general guidance about their work assignments. In addition, the other attorneys in the firm are interested in the success of summer associates and many become informal mentors.
Summer associates participate in professional development through the firm’s University Stinson Leonard curriculum. They are able to participate in the same learning opportunities as our attorneys. As part of the summer program, students are introduced to the firm's practice divisions and leadership, the firm's continued commitment to diversity and pro bono work, and are instructed on a variety of topics that will introduce them to the practice of law, including legal writing, law firm economics and working in a team environment.
The Review Process
Throughout their time at the firm, summer associates receive valuable feedback and coaching from seasoned attorneys. Assigning attorneys are required to provide timely written feedback and are encouraged to share verbal feedback when each summer associate project is completed. This feedback is solicited in real time so that the summer associate has the opportunity to incorporate the advice into future work projects.
The Social/Networking Events
Because it is important for law students to network with their peers and practicing attorneys, we make a variety of social events an essential part of the framework of our Summer Associate program. Stinson Leonard Street Summer Associates have:
Our goal is in integrate summer associates into the firm as if they were associates, while providing them with an opportunity to get to know their new colleagues. Projects and activities like those highlighted above ensure that each week for our summer associates is both challenging and rewarding.
