In 2013, legacy firm Leonard, Street and Deinard received a Pro Bono Publico Award from the ABA Standing Committee on Pro Bono and Public Service at a luncheon Aug. 12, 2013, at the Moscone Center West during the ABA Annual Meeting in San Francisco. The Pro Bono Publico Awards honor individuals or organizations in the legal community that enhance the human dignity of others by improving or delivering volunteer legal services to the poor or disadvantaged.
Through the Deinard Legal Clinic at the Community-University Health Care Center in south Minneapolis, firm attorneys provide free legal representation in an effort to help improve the health and welfare of the patients. Additionally, clients of more than 15 Minnesota public interest law organizations and over 120 community nonprofits receive pro bono legal services each year. The firm was honored by the D.C. Bar's Pro Bono Program as a Gold Medal Participant in its Advocacy and Justice Clinic. This program recruits, trains and mobilizes volunteer attorneys to take pro bono cases servicing individuals living in poverty who are at risk of losing their homes, their livelihoods and their families. In addition, five of the firm's Washington D.C. attorneys were recognized on the 2012 Capital Pro Bono Honor Roll.
Kansas City attorney Steve Chinn was honored with this year's Coburn award , which is given to a member of the Kansas City bar who has become "an inspiration for others through selfless service to their community." In 2009 Steve led a group of Stinson attorneys and others to form a not-for-profit corporation composed of representatives of five inner-city Kansas City neighborhoods, landlords, clergy and business owners to address blighted and neglected properties and the needs of the people who live there. Steve and the firm continue to provide pro bono legal and other volunteer work to this community.
The firm's St. Louis office was honored with a 2016 Pro Bono Publico Award from the Missouri Bar Association. The award is given to the attorneys and law firms that have demonstrated exemplary service to low-income individuals who need legal assistance consistent with the profession's traditions and ethical code. The St. Louis office was also recognized by Legal Services of Eastern Missouri with this year's Gerald R. Ortbals Outstanding Law Practice Award. The award is presented each year to a firm for its outstanding commitment as a law practice to pro bono legal work. Legal Services of Eastern Missouri nominated the St. Louis office for both awards in recognition of its work with victims of domestic violence and their children through their Lasting Solutions Family Law Program, formation work through their Community Economic Development Program, and guardianship and termination of parental rights cases from the Family Court Program. The firm regularly assists with appellate briefs, guardianship matters and small business issues.
