Partner Jarrod Kieffer authored an article for the Kansas City Chamber of Commerce detailing important tax information for commercial property owners. In his article, Jarrod explains how taking the time to evaluate and minimize tax liabilities is crucial for commercial property owners, especially for owners in Kansas and Missouri where property taxes are among the highest in the nation. Commercial property owners also pay nearly double the rate owed by residential property owners, making property taxes one of the largest fixed expenses that many owners face.

Jarrod goes on to provide insight into managing property taxes at acquisition, the tax appeals process and whether or not businesses are entitled to tax relief due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Because navigating the complexities of property tax can be difficult, Jarrod advises owners to consider consulting a professional in order to best manage their liabilities.

"Unfortunately, the concept of fair market value and the property tax process are not intuitive or obvious; however, managing commercial property taxes is an important part of operating almost any business. Just as business owners hire accountants to assist with income tax planning and compliance, they should consider consulting with a property tax professional to manage their property tax liabilities."

Jarrod represents both taxpayers and taxing jurisdictions, guiding his clients through every step of the property tax process. He focuses on issues relating to real and personal property valuation and classification, value equalization, property tax exemptions and property tax compliance.
