Stinson Represents Citizens in Charge Foundation Before Missouri Supreme Court
Stinson has filed an amicus brief in the Missouri Supreme Court on behalf of The Citizens in Charge Foundation. The Citizens in Charge Foundation is a nonprofit thought leader and advocate on behalf of direct democracy, such as initiatives and referenda.
The amicus brief supported a Missouri trial court’s ruling that Missouri’s law requiring a ballot title be affixed to petitions requesting a referenda, and that the secretary of state could take up to 51 days to draft one, was unconstitutional. The amicus brief urged the court to adopt the highest standard of review—strict scrutiny—because the referendum is a fundamental right guaranteed by the Missouri Constitution and deeply engrained in American democracy.
Partner Chuck Hatfield is representing the Citizens in Charge Foundation on this matter.
